Textured Tunic

This is a sweater from Stefanie Japel's Fitted Knits. The design is top down which I love since you can try it on as you go. The original pattern called for a different weight yarn and a different neckline. It also incorporated buttons on the sides which isn't really for me. I basically used the final dimensions and stitch pattern. The yarn used is Paton's Classic Wool (4.5 skeins) with a size 8 needle.

Shawls 5 and 6

I used Lion Brand Microspun yarn to make a Sweet Pea Shawl. The pattern is from "The Happy Hooker". The original pattern is triangle shaped but I prefer a softer "tip". The yarn is so soft too.

The South Bay Shawlette is another Ravelry favorite. I may be making more of these. So quick and effective. The yarn I used is a handdyed sock yarn from White Oak Studio. I won it as part of the 10 Shawls 2010 challenge - random drawing. :) My favorite shawl so far.

Shawls 3 and 4

I enjoyed working the Seraphina Shawl so much and saw many laceweight versions on Ravelry that I had to make my own. I used some leftover Knit Picks Shadow yarn and really liked how it turned out.

Some of the shawls I crocheted were part of other crochet-alongs on Ravelry. This one was to learn how to read lace charts from a Japanese pattern. Not too hard. :) The wool yarn was some I had bought on Ebay.

Blankets

One of my four sisters was married this year and my tradition has been to make a blanket with each family wedding. She requested a grey one so I selected Caron's Simply Soft in grey heather. The pattern is Elegant Shells by Terry Kimbrough (not available online). She has the best edgings.

I find these blankets work up quickly so I went ahead and made one for my last single sister (she's engaged). This one is made from Paton's Classic Wool and the pattern is Shells Galore also by Terry Kimbrough. I ran out of yarn so had to omit two edging repeats. Not sure I like it as much.

Shawls 1 and 2 of 2010

The first shawl I made for the "10 Shawls in 2010" challenge was Sweet Scallops Shawl in Elann's Pure Bamboo yarn. Love the feel of the yarn and it is so drapey. I added some pattern repeats to make it a bit wider and then worked from the center out until I achieved the length I liked.

Shawl 2 is the ever popular Seraphina. I made this version in Paton's Classic Wool. Made it as big as 3 skeins would go. I may donate this one since it's a bit bulky.

2010 - Year of the Shawl

Early in the year I discovered the "10 Shawls in 2010" Ravelry Group. As the group name implies, the goal is to make 10 shawls this year. Wasn't sure if I was going to make it but thought it would be fun to attempt. October 2010 - I have 8 done. Chances are good that I will complete 2 more by the end of the year.

My original intent was to knit half and crochet half but I am a ssssllloooowwww knitter. The 8 shawls are all crocheted. Some of them took 2-3 days total. The 1 knit shawl I started - many, many months with no end in sight. It is of course a round tablecloth so I expected it to take along time but dude, forever.

Bugs! and Snakes

For Christmas I made my niece and nephews some crocheted bugs and snakes. They had admired the ones I made my daughter so I made them their very own. They were a huge hit!

We have ants, spiders and tarantulas.

I just used Red Heart Supersaver yarn and an F hook. The patterns I used were Camo Snake and Creepy Crawlies (both free). Pipe cleaners make the legs extra fun.

2009 Block of the Month CAL Blankets

At the end of last year's ravelry CAL, I had 29 - 12" squares and 12 - 6" squares. These squares were sewn together to make 2 blankets. For edgings, I just crocheted some rounds of dc and a reverse sc final round.

I liked the green/off white colors and many of the blocks. What I didn't like was the fact that several squares had way more stitches at the outer rounds than the majority (note curling of edges). In hindsight, I should have realized this would be a problem but I know now. :)

I also didn't like the randomness. When you make a blanket with all the same squares, ya get bored so I hoped this would be more interesting. It was interesting as individual blocks but I much prefer order and symmetry in a final project. Lesson learned.

Where Have I Been?

My last post was Dec 2009. It is now Oct 2010. Where have I been? What have I been up to? Why am I posting again?

Let me say the 2009 Block a Month CAL burned me out last year. Every month I felt pressure to work on those blocks and nothing else. Then when I put the afghans together, I did not love them. That was a lot of work for then not loving the finished project.

I also became very discouraged when reading other blogs and noticing I do not post as much or have as many projects. So I just stopped posting. But I still crocheted and knit, entered the 4H fair and have taken up quilting.

I'll be updating the blog over the next few weeks with my 2010 projects. Why? I've been meeting new people who are interested in what I work on and thought it would be nice to send them to my blog. It should be an up to date blog. I will try not to compare it to other blogs and remember that this is what I can work on. Hopefully others will find something interesting or informative as well.

Baby Kimono Wrap With Hood

My friend, Kandie wanted a one-of-a-kind sweater for her little one (size 18 months). She knows I love this stuff. :)

This is based on the Crochet Me “Baby Kimono Wrap” with a sc/dc stitch pattern. I improvised the hood from various patterns. I made an opening on each side for the tie to go through so she can wrap from either side.

The project took 6 skeins of Bernat Satin Ombres in Faded Glory with a G hook.

A few weeks ago my daughter spotted a Woody doll at a garage sale and had to have him. Of course she then requested Mommy make a horse for Woody. I accepted the challenge. I found this pattern online and set to work. My plan was to make the saddle and bridle and add facial features but she was quite impatient. She loves her new horse. :)

American Beauty Shawl

This shawl was part of a knit-a-long with BadCatDesigns. I used a little more than 2 skeins of Knit Picks Shadow laceweight yarn in Hot Rod on size 4 needles. Those are beads in there, 875 of them - clear, silved lined, size 8 glass. Lots of work getting those knit into the shawl. The blocked shawl is 70" across the top and 34" down the spine. Love the end result!

Another pair of crocheted socks. Actually two pairs. I bought one skein of Tofutsies yarn and as I was crocheting my socks, I saw the interest in my little ones eyes and thought it would be cute to make a matching pair for her. She wants more!

The pattern is Toes Up Socks by Mary Rhodes. I found it easy to work and you can't beat trying them on as you go. Definitely more in the future.

Morning Surf Scarf

I finished my first spinning project! The Ravelry group Ply By Night selected the Morning Surf Scarf as our project. Here is my version.

My final yarn was 131 yards, 3.5 oz, 14 wpi (DK weight) - 2 ply. The scarf is pretty small since I didn't have lots of yardage, only 5" x 37". I kind of knew it was going to be that way but figured my little one can wear the scarf.

All in all, I'm very pleased with my first handspun project. I have 4 oz of the roving left to play with and I recently signed up for Butterfly Girl Designs' Spindle and Fiber Club where I will receive a spindle and some fiber every month for 3 months. Can't wait to see what comes in my first shipment!

Print O' The Wave Stole

Knitted lace has always fascinated me. The Print O' The Wave Stole was a great first lace project, lots of samples on the internet for inspiration. It took a loooong time to work on but only 2 skeins of Knit Picks Shadow yarn (midnight heather). Very affordable. I finally blocked it this week.

The knitting was complete in October so why do you ask did I not block it until February. Well, as I grafted the edging (ie, finished it), I noticed that I knit the right side of the edging with the WRONG side of the panel facing. I was completely disgusted and put the finished knit in the closet, out of my sight. :( Fast forward to now and I needed a gift for my grandmother's 90th birthday so I thought, let me block the stole and see how it looks. AMAZING! The blocking made it look so beautiful and the WS/RS thing didn't bother me at all. Even my mom and sisters were impressed.

Lesson learned - blocking really does do wonderful things (the time lapse probably helped as well).

2009 12” (6”) Crochet Block A Month CAL

Last year I committed to making a sweater a month. This year's commitment will be much easier, two 12" and one 6" squares a month to have enough squares for a blanket at the end of the year. I'm using Caron One Pound yarn in Off White and Leaf Green. The crochet-along is on Ravelry and they even choose the squares so I don't have to. :)

Spinning!!!

Being a member of Ravelry is quite dangerous. Besides all the gorgeous patterns and yarns to tempt you for knitting and crocheting, there are lots of people who spin their own yarn. I found a Ravelry group that is doing a spin study. Each member is getting the same hand-dyed superwash merino roving and spinning it in January. The resulting yarn will then be knit into the same scarf. What a perfect opportunity to learn.

Now, most people will be using a spinning wheel but the least expensive one I've seen is $300. Not in the budget right now (especially since I'm not sure I'll love it) so I will be doing it the old old fashioned way of using a drop spindle. I made a drop spindle out of a dowel, rubber grommet, screw hook and a CD.

Divine Hat for Ava

Boatneck Bluebell - Nov/Dec Sweater

My last sweater for the Sweater a Month Knitalong is the Boatneck Bluebell by Stephanie Japel - Fitted Knits. It is knit in Patons Classic Wool Merino in Leaf Green (4.25 skeins) using size 8 needles.

I had added some short rows for the bust thinking I'm all pro now and then realized after it was done, that the sweater did not need them. So I had to pick/rip them out and graft the sweater back together again. It was major surgery but I did it (thanks to a supportive husband who kept the child away). I also decided I didn't like flared sleeves so knit them straight. These pics are of the unblocked sweater. It is blocking as I type and I stretched the sleeves out a bit to add a few inches.

Tall Latte for October

Sweater number 11! This is Doris Chan's Talle Latte. I crocheted a short sleeve version since I didn't have much yarn (a little more than 5 skeins). It's the same yarn as my Shapely Tank, Knit Picks Cotlin in Kohlrabi. Who says crochet eats up more yarn? I used slightly more for this but it has extra material in the sleeves.

I used my new knowledge of short rows to customize the fit. Short rows are easy! And then I added bust darts. It fits perfectly!

Here is a great article on short rows. This is what made the technique click for me.

Testing Patterns for Others

While I took my month off from the sweaters, I tested some patterns for other crochet designers. I appreciate timely testing so thought I'd volunteer.

Mermaid Scales is a bikini set by Pyogazel. I used Lion Brand Cotton Ease.

Parul is a triangle scarf/shawl by Rebecca Logan (ravelry - ThatLogan Chick). I used Berroco Seduce and it is YUMMY.

And then the Sweet Pea Tote by Cathy Phillips (ravelry - LuvMaxine). The yarn is Caron One Pound and this is my favorite carryall.

Shapely Tank for August

August's sweater project was the Shapely Tank by White Lies Design. I knew it would be kind of boring since it is all stockinette but I wanted 1) something not too tough, 2) to try the short row shaping for the bust, 3) a project with not too much yarn, and 4) it is part of the Sexy Knitters' Club knit-along this quarter.

I used 5 skeins of Knit Picks CotLin in Kohlrabi, size 6 needles. The short row shaping was easier than I thought. I plan to incorporate them into future projects. Not so crazy about the color but I really like the finished top and plan to get some use out of it.

Having made 10 sweaters this year so far (sweater a month club, remember?) I feel a little sick of making them . :) I'm taking September off since I'm ahead.

Elegant Shell

This was my July Sweater of the Month Club project. I know, I didn't blog about it earlier but I'm not too happy with it. It is the Elegant Shell by Lion Brand and I used 3 skeins of Microspun in French Vanilla. I like the yarn, I like the pattern but it is very holey and I can't wear it in public without an undershirt. I haven't frogged it yet so I'm still considering if I want to keep it or not. Maybe if I find the right undershirt. Anyway, I added some waist shaping which I think helps get rid of the boxy crochet look.

Rust Goes Green

We are all trying to be more environmental these days. Reusing shopping bags is one way and there has been a plethora of market bag patterns lately. This one is Rust Goes Green and I used Sugar'n Cream Confectionery Colors (Caramel) and a G hook. It is huge and has already been useful.

My First Handmade Socks

These socks are crocheted! The pattern is Cabled Socks and I just love all the versions I have seen on Ravelry. I only have one done because of course, I have to modify stuff and it takes a little longer but the second one should be done ALOT faster. The yarn is Silk City Bambu 7 and the hook is a 2.55 mm (size 0) steel. Hopefully my photography will improve when I take picks of the pair. :)

Sugar 'N Cream Stuff

I had a 12 oz skein of Sugar 'N Cream and decided it was time to use it up. I made a Market Bag, a dish sponge and another spiral scrubbie. I'm surprised how soft the yarn was and I think I'll be using it more, especially when it goes on sale. :)

July Sweater of the Month

I'm a member of the Sweater of the Month Club on Ravelry and this month my plan was/is to crochet a tank top from an existing pattern rather than creating something from scratch. I figured it would be easier and quicker but I've realized there is a reason I tinker with patterns. The gauge swatches I have made are very open and holey (two different patterns, two different yarns, various hooks). Gorgeous but I'll have to wear something underneath for modesty. It defeats the purpose of summerwear to have 2 layers. But they are so pretty.

Lelah Top

This is the size 4T version of the Lelah Top (knitting). I've wanted to make this top for myself for such a long time but thought it would look better on my daughter. Took less time and yarn too. :)

The yarn is Elann Sonata in Coffee Bean (2.5 skeins) and I used a size 6 needle. I had to resize the pattern but it was simple enough. Made a gauge swatch and figured out to make 11 repeats of the lace for a 22" chest. Then simple stockinette for the top part with crocheted straps. I added a picot edging to match the eyelet row.

The hardest part of the project was getting my little one to sit still for fittings and then to take the picture. It looks more artistic this way. :)

Simply Shawl

My friend, Yvonne is having a baby and I thought in addition to a baby gift, I'd make a shawl just for her. The pattern is Caron's Simply Shawl. The yarn is Simply Soft Autumn Red. It truly is soft.

My daughter couldn't help but snuggle with mommy. :)

Basket Turned Hat

I'm trying to use up some old yarn I have and make some small projects at the same time. I found this pattern for some cute baskets and thought I'd give it a try.

When I showed my daughter the basket, she immediately placed it on her head and said, "Thank you for the hat." Of course I wasn't quick enough to get a picture but you get the idea. :)

Top Down Crochet Tunic

This top is crocheted from the top down with no seams. Just thought I'd experiment with something different. Because it is top down, it was easy to customize the fit. The yarn is Knit Picks Shine Sport in Crocus, 8 skeins. It is a dk/sport weight cotton/modal so the top is pretty light.

Not sure if I'm going to do a pattern for this. Still thinking about it...

Bella Paquita!!

This sweater has been on my mind for quite awhile. The first time I saw the pattern, I knew I'd be making it eventually. That was 2 years ago. The Sexy Knitters Club had a knitalong recently for it and although I didn't finish in time (March), I have finished it.

I learned ALOT with this sweater. First time with the provisional cast on, first time seaming a knit item, I improved my lace knitting and fitting techniques. But most importantly, I learned to trust that I knew what I was doing. :) Each piece made me wonder if I was doing it right, would I get a proper fit, would I mess everything up with my seaming. Lots of anxiety but I love the finished sweater. It's not blocked yet but I couldn't wait to post it.

For all the knitters, I used 5 skeins of Patons Classic Merino Wool yarn in natural mix with my size 8 circulars. My gauge was slightly off so I compensated by knitting the large. The FREE pattern can be found here.

I test knit this pattern for Lily Go. It is the Empire Top and the version I made was DK. The yarn is Patons Classic Merino Wool in Leaf Green (4 1/2 skeins) on size 8 needles. I really enjoyed working on it and Lily has some great patterns.

Men's Crochet Cardigan

I made this top down cardigan for my husband. It was supposed to be for Valentine's Day but things happen. It's only a week late and he loves it.

It is crocheted except for the sleeve and bottom edgings which are 2x2 knit rib. The yarn is Paton's Classic Merino in Dark Grey Mix (8 skeins) and I used an F hook and size 6 needles.

The crochet stitch pattern I used was 'sc in front lp, sc in back loop' all the way across. The texture is fabulous but I can never get the pics to show it right. The neck edging is simple rows of sc and he wanted a zipper.

NOTE: I get a lot of requests for this pattern but I DO NOT have a pattern written up for it. It was a one time design customized for my husband. Sorry.

I was at my LYS a few months ago and decided to buy a skein of Classic Elite's Wool Bam Boo. The teal was calling to me and I really wanted to try the 50% wool/50% bamboo yarn. What do you do with only one skein? These fingerless mittens from Knitty.com were perfect. My first knit cables and it was easier than I thought. Love them!

This yarn is TRULY yummy. If price were no object, I'd use it for everything.

Top Down Knit (Purl Stripe) Sweater

I joined the Ravelry Sweater a Month Group and this is my completed January sweater. It is knit top down with a purl stripe every 8th row. The yarn is 2 skeins Patons Classic Merino in Rosewood. I used my size 8 circulars. My knitting improves so much with each sweater.

Two Terry Kimbrough Afghans

I recently made two afghans as wedding presents, one for my brother's fiance and the other for one of my sisters.

Both are by Terry Kimbrough and were in Leisure Arts Leaflet #3001, Absolutely Gorgeous Sentimental Shells. I used Caron Simply Soft for both. The Autumn Red (Lacy Shells) took 5 skeins and the Off White (Shells Galore) took 4 skeins. I ran out of Off White so I omitted an edging repeat. I still like it. :) These were very easy and quick to crochet.

Deep V Sweater

I've been testing my Deep V Crochet Sweater Pattern and have completed a size small.

I also had some yarn left over and made a smaller version for my daughter, a 3T.

I used Bernat Satin Sport in Plum, 6 skeins for the small and 3 skeins for the 3T. Since I've made a few versions, they work up quickly. :)

Busy, Busy, Busy

Hadn't realized it had been so long since my last entry. I've been busy, busy, busy. On what? Mostly charity projects. Check out these mittens I'm sending out to The Soaring Eagles Project.

The patterns are all from Bev's Country Cottage. I'm a faster crocheter than knitter so that's why most of them are crocheted. :)

I also submitted about 15 "7x9 squares" for Warm Up America to the local Michael's. Great way to use up scraps.

And, I'm testing my Deep V Sweater Pattern. I had a little yarn left over from the sample I made so I'm using it to crochet a mini one for my daughter (3T). Almost done so be on the lookout for a cute picture. :)

Tomato

I knit the Tomato sweater from "No Sheep For You" in size Medium. From the first time I saw the pattern, I knew I'd be knitting it. The yarn is Cotton Ease, my first time using it and I really enjoyed working with it. Terracotta (4 skeins) and Almond (1 skein) on size 7 circulars. My only modification was to add a few rows here and there. My row gauge was slightly off. Now I have to wait until spring to wear it. :)

Elegant Lace Poncho

I had this yarn in my stash (4 skeins brushed acrylic) and my daughter kept telling me how soft it was so I made her a poncho. The pattern is Elegant Lace by Dot Matthews. I used sport weight yarn and an F hook to make it a bit smaller for my 2 year old. It's still a little big but she will grow into it.

Cluster Stitch Sweater

I completely forgot I had made this sweater back in January. It is based on the Parisienne Twin Set in the May 2006 issue of Crochet! magazine. I loved the stitch but didn't want to make a spaghetti strap top so I kind of combined the top pattern with the cardigan pattern. I also didn't have enough yarn to make long sleeves. Just love the edging though!

The yarn is Knit Picks Merino Style (DK weight) in Hollyberry with an F hook. Nine skeins were used.

My daughter is fascinated with "The Wizard of Oz" so my husband, being the doting father that he is, has searched high and low for any figurines. He found a set on Ebay with Dorothy, The Scarecrow, The Tin Man, The Lion, The Good Witch, and The Wicked Witch. Do you think that's enough? No, he asked that I make a basket and Toto for the Dorothy doll. This thing is tiny but I never pass up a challenge.

The basket was made from size 10 crochet thread, US 7 needle. The dog is a mini amigurumi made from size 30 thread, US 10 needle.

Angel Wings Scarf Testing

Recently I tested the Angel Wings Scarf pattern for mom4x on Crochetville. Her version is here, in size 3 thread. I made mine with sport weight yarn. My 2 year old daughter was so excited to get it but I couldn't get any useable pictures of her with it. She was TOO excited. LOL!

Aran Fleck Knit Sweater

Gotta throw some knitting in here...

I bought this Aran Fleck Red Heart yarn on sale one day and decided to practice some knitting. I found some general guidelines for knitting a sweater from the top down and made a size 3T sweater. I didn't like the feel of the yarn but I did like the stitch definition. The sweater will be donated to Knit For Kids along with a few crocheted sweaters I made during the year.

I picked up my County Fair winners yesterday. Here is a pic of them all together.

I know my photography is bad (poor lighting) but dark colors do not photograph well. :( The top two are my first place (blue ribbon) winners.

Wow! I just got back from our County Fair and my four entries won four ribbons!!! I'm so motivated to make more. My blanket ( http://fmlcrochet.blogspot.com/2007/07/let-me-start-off-with-this.html ) won 1st Place in the Crochet Non-clothing Division and I won 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the Crochet Clothing Division. All three are my original patterns. Vertical Rib Sweater was 3rd and I have yet to post the other two.

I'll be picking up my entries on Sunday and will take pictures of them with their ribbons.

It is worked vertically in worsted weight yarn. The pattern is for an intermediate crochet skill level.

The sweater is intended to be close fitting. The actual finished sweater dimensions will be less than the bust measurements.

Crochet Runner

I made this runner last summer thinking I'd give it as a gift. However I didn't really have a recipient in mind. My uncle is celebrating 25 years of priesthood in a few weeks and I thought he'd like it.

It is filet crochet, size 30 crochet cotton, and was made from the American School of Needlework pamphlet "Table Runners and Placemats". I love all the patterns in this collection!

Let Me Start Off With This

I'm finally getting into the blog thing and thought I'd start off with posting a blanket I made for my sister, Luisa. It was a wedding gift for her.

This is called "Bouquet of Shells" and was designed by Terry Kimbrough. The blanket was made with 4 skeins of Caron's Simply Soft in Plum Wine and a J hook. It was very easy and quick to crochet. In fact, I think it only took a week of sporadic crocheting.
